An urban agriculture plan co-produced by graduate students and community partners in Buffalo, NY | 2023

As long as cities have existed in the United States, there have been residents growing food for sustenance. But agriculture is not only a source of survival, it is a site of resistance. Particularly for Black communities in the United States, the process of caring for and cultivating the land is seen as a liberatory act. Urban agriculture, when employed in pursuit of equity, has the potential to stabilize neighborhoods, improve public health, and address food apartheid within cities. A planning report co-produced by graduate students (at the University at Buffalo), community partners (Juneteenth Agricultural Pavilion in Buffalo, NY), and policy partners (County of Erie, NY) illustrates how urban agriculture can be used as a lever for advancing equity.

The report Growing Toward Equity aims to:

1. Promote and help sustain equitable urban agriculture in East Side neighborhoods; especially grounded in ideas, histories, and practices of Black growers.

2. Gather, analyze, synthesize, and provide information about urban agriculture.

3. Develop local government policy and planning strategies for the protection and expansion of urban agriculture.

The report may be of interest to community educators and food system educators interested in working together to advance food equity.

Growing Food Connections (GFC) is nurturing the next generation of food systems leaders, thinkers and scholars to tackle food systems through planning and policy. We support faculty and students to teach and learn about food systems planning.

Only a small number of professional planning departments in the United States currently offer education and training in food systems. To further the field of food systems planning, Growing Food Connections assembled current food systems planning educational materials, such as syllabi, to deepen the curricular offerings on food systems.

Doctoral Fellowship

There is a growing demand for new research, scholarship and education in the field of food systems planning and policy. To build the capacity of the next generation of food systems scholars and faculty to address this need, Growing Food Connections supports doctoral education in food systems planning and policy.

In spring of 2013, Growing Food Connections (GFC) launched the first-ever doctoral fellowship in food systems planning in the United States at the University at Buffalo (UB). Named after the father of food systems planning, Professor Jerome Kaufman, FAICP, the Kaufman fellow at the University at Buffalo works on GFC-related research, as well as their own own dissertation research. The inaugural Kaufman fellow, Dr. Subhashni Raj, graduated in 2018.

Kaufman fellows receive their doctoral degree through the PhD program in Urban and Regional Planning at the UB School of Architecture and Planning. The program is the first and only doctoral program in urban and regional planning in the State University of New York system, and the only one in the country to have food systems planning as one of its five focal areas.

Growing Food Connections partnership supports doctoral education in food systems planning at the Ohio State University (OSU). Doctoral students at the John Glenn School of Public Affairs have the opportunity to focus their doctoral research on food systems policy and work closely with GFC.

By assembling current food systems educational material GFC deepens the curricular offerings of planning programs in the US.

Education Course Curriculum

A growing number of professional planning departments are training students in food systems planning. In 2004, only nine programs in the United States offered, or had offered in the past, “a course that addressed community food systems—either as a standalone course or embedded in a regular course (Hammer 2004).” Among these programs, the University of Wisconsin-Madison played a pioneering role in planning education on food systems by offering coursework in this area (Mendes, Joe Nasr et al. 2011), training both masters and doctoral students. Today more than 20 of 74 accredited planning programs offer seminars on food systems planning, indicating a growing desire among schools to support planning education in food systems. Courses taught at planning programs include seminars and studio (or, practicum) courses on food systems planning.

Denver Food Rescue

Denver Food Rescue is a nonprofit focused on improving health equity outcomes by increasing access to healthy foods in low income areas. We do this by redistributing food from grocery stores, which would otherwise go to waste, directly to Free Grocery Programs. Slow Food USA’s National School Garden Program (NSGP) aims to reconnect youth with their food by teaching them how to grow, cook and enjoy real food. Through increased confidence, knowledge gain and skill building, we want to empower children to become active participants in their food choices.
